A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
