SNAP Payments Scheduled to Cease for 41 Million During Continuing Federal Shutdown

USDA officials stated on Saturday that monthly food benefits from a major federal welfare initiatives will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.

Shutdown Extends Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse had reached its 25th day at the time of the statement, in response to calls from over 200 Democratic representatives urging the department to tap into emergency reserves to pay for next month's benefits.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Currently, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

Tens of millions of people depend on the regular assistance, per official statistics. Some regions, including one southwestern state, reliance on the program affects a significant portion of citizens.

A memo obtained by a major news agency revealed that federal authorities decided against using emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree about the way to finance and restart the federal government.

Remarks from the director at a prominent policy organization indicated that the White House had opportunities to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“It could have, and should have taken steps weeks ago to be prepared to access these resources,” the remarks concluded. “Instead, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to support a spending bill that would reopen federal functions.

Local Responses

State leaders from Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency recently to make money available to combat potential hunger in anticipation of SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
