Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can keep managing with player absences after revealing that forward Kai Havertz is not ready for the coming weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been out since August following an operation on his knee. Initially expected to come back sooner, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is much more reliable and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news creates a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position against Chelsea, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Further fitness issues involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on squad depth ahead of this season has resulted in a much stronger position to deal with such unavailability.

In response if more options was aiding their league challenge, his response was positive. “Absolutely, since the current term has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he continued.

Arteta expressed his eagerness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
