European Union economic leaders are meeting in the EU capital this Thursday to address the bloc's economic agenda, including the increasingly urgent issue of financial support to Ukraine.
Ukraine's President Warns Nation's Survival Relies on Partners
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a latest discussion that the country's survival relied on obtaining more funds from international partners.
“We trust, God bless, they will approve this decision,” he stated to media outlets. Otherwise, “It will be necessary to seek an alternative, it concerns our survival. For this reason it is essential very much. And I count on partners.”
European Authorities Advocates €140bn Compensation Funding
The EU executive still hopes to convince participating countries – including Belgium, which is currently blocking the proposal due to juridical concerns – to proceed with a €140bn financial compensation using Moscow's immobilized funds.
Commission president Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that this represents “the most effective way to support Ukraine’s defence and its economy.”
Resolution Delayed Until December Meeting
A final decision on the matter has been postponed until the European Council meeting in December, with the funding required early next year.
Discussions Coincide with Bribery Allegations in Ukraine
But these discussions are happening during a difficult time for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy had to move to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a corruption scandal in the energy sector, dismissing two ministers allegedly involved in participating in a large-scale corruption network.
Danish finance leader Stephanie Lose was questioned on her reaction to the allegations, and insisted that there was determination to continue supporting Ukraine.
“Of course, Ukraine will have to continuously work with reforms, strengthening every sector of their society [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that there’s a strong European support behind Ukraine,” she stated.
Additional European Developments Under Watch
Separately, analysts will be monitoring the Netherlands where the parliament convenes to discuss potential ways ahead in the coalition talks, the Italy-Albania consultations in the Italian capital offering the latest chance to witness the brilliant Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a number of high-level conferences across Europe, including the Alliance's the secretary general's trip to a military installation in Germany.
Lots for us to report on.
Today is Thursday, 13 November 2025, and this is Europe Live.
Welcome.
