California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom remarked when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Rising Profile as a Trump Critic
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and pushing a initiative that would increase the party's representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This action has made him a target from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to cut federal funds from California and threatened eliminating the power to issue trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy stated, following a recent deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that led to loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had approved the driver's employment on several occasions, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recent study revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
